k&k episode 177 - the one where they discuss the link between personality and language... and stuff...
Inspired by a blog post by Justin, we get reflective in episode 177, talking about the link between personality and language. We talk about how hard it can be to learn a language, the importance of humour, the challenges in getting ones personality across, and how comfortable we feel "being ourselves" in French. We round up the episode rather flippantly with a discussion of the many and varied rules of chinking in France.
This episode was brought to you by the word "santé !" (cheers!).
Most French people think I am very quiet and well behaved. If they only knew.
I know exactly what you ladies mean! I live in an English-speaking part of Canada and my second language is, strangely enough, French. I'm also a French Immersion teacher, so my work life has always been French, with many native French speakers from Québec. It took me almost 10 years before my natural humour came out, I think, and lots of my French friends told me later that they had no idea I was so much fun. Also complicating things for me was my accent and vocabulary from the south of France - the Québecois accent and vocabulary are VERY different. I think I'm a hybrid now.
Haha! You all do the 'crazy eyes' drink chinking as well! Excellent.
I feel that my husband's personality is so different in French and English...he's definitely funnier and more silly in English and way more serious in French.
As for myself in French, I'm officially the quiet, silent mute...it's a good motivator for learning French, it's just too boring to be silent and mute all the time!
Loved this episode!

Well... two shows now in a row where I am mentioned! Hooray pour ça! Glad I could be your muse ;-) See you tomorrow!
