Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think we ever really discussed the recording industry or what artists get or don't get. We were just chatting about what WE're experiencing as consumers and in relation to the various piracy laws - which led to the topic of that lady who got "caught" for illegal downloading...
You can't really say we don't understand how this particular industry "works", because we're hardly going to go into a deep discussion about such things on this lighthearted show. And seriously, we have more interesting things to talk about. Like how to TALK like pirates. heh.
sorry i missed the live show :( It sounded like a supper blast.
Now i just need to download a MJ tune, hike up my pants, hide my bra strap, jump on my skate board and act my age until the next podcast.
Gil, please take a photo. hahahaha.
True, you didn't get into a discussion of the recording industry as such. But the remarks about the woman who was fined and other piracy remarks leads one to believe that you have sided with the RIAA. Logically, the only reason one would take their side is because one doesn't understand the true nature of the beast. As further proof of my opinion of the RIAA, I offer the fact that several recording artists have built their own websites where one can download their music for free. They do offer the option of donating something to the cause for those who don't want to join the RIAA in ripping them off.
@starman... hold on, so you're saying that JUSt because we thought the lady was wrong by illegally downloading and then redistributing these downloads, we AGREE with the RIAA? I don't think that saying one thing automatically supports the other.
You can't know what we might or might not understand about such issues when we didn't actually address this particular topic... I've been a big supporter of independent artists for a very long time.
You might remember when we first addressed the issue of piracy in one of our first unplugged episodes - I even suggested that the issue of illegal downloading is huge, and that instead of just saying "that's naughty, don't do it", governments should be asking themselves WHY people are downloading in the first place.
You know, we're not idiots... despite our sometimes inane commentary on this show :)
I think we have found the theme of Episode 300! RIAA vs K&K or wait was that RIAA & K&K vs downloaders or downloaders & K&K vs MPAA & RIAA... I'm confused. But hey if it helps commenters forget this is a fun podcast about two wonderful girls lives and their sometimes silly ramblings, I am all for it ... oh wait no I am not! I vote more Bobcat Goldwaith voices and rants about the color of the sidewalk (that should be a good debate and will have each side ready to attack)!
I was not suggesting, or even implying, that you're idiots, but K's remark about buying the CD for $9 (good luck with that) clearly indicates she sides with the RIAA, at least in that instance. Your sometimes inane commentary is what endears you to us.
@Justin - colored sidewalks?
You're right...good luck with that as most US retailers are charging around $9.99 for an actual CD and online retailers are charging significantly less for a full album download.
How 'bout you don't make assumptions about what I believe or who I "side with" (whatever that means)...k? You know what assuming does, right?
@Kathryn - Speaking of making assumptions. You are not the K to whom I referred. Sorry if I've upset any of you.
@starman - I'm now "assuming" that you're talking about the fact that *I* bought an album? So by purchasing music, I'm "clearly siding with the RIAA". So what, I'm not supposed to buy any music now, except that produced by independent artists? Can't I do both? Or is it better to download stuff illegally? there are so many directions in which I could take that, but I don't think you understand what we've been trying to say in these last few comments... I think you've jumped to an incorrect conclusion.
And honestly, I'm not a mean person, but I really don't appreciate people suggesting that I'm ignorant.
Seriously, if you don't like what we say, don't listen.
A - I did NOT say anything about anyone buying a CD.
B - I did NOT suggest, or imply, that you or anyone else is ignorant
C - I agree that you are NOT a mean person
D - You have the right to say anything you want.
E - I have the right to agree or disagree with what is said.
F - I think you've all blown this way out of proportion.
OK...I'll just hum a Michael Jackson medley whilst Mom & Mom & Mom & Dad fight.
Someone's got a biting hampster in the rectum.
Now before anyone begins to gnaw on my neck in the effort to divorce my head from my shoulders...I AM JOKING!!! (What? What? In the butt?)
Everyone take a deep breath...and a Xanax. 'Cause this is Thrillerrrrr! Thriller Night! Heal the world...The kid is not my son...hehe...shamon...You know I'm BAD, I'm BAD, you know it shamon...I wanna rock with you, all night and dance you into day...Just beat it! Beat it!
as a child did anyone else ever wonder what "SHAMON" was?
thank god we now have the internet to solve these mysteries of our yoots:

Your whole take on the "piracy" issue is skewed because you don't understand how the recording industry works. Also, the RIAA does NOT represent the recording artists, they only represent the recording industry. If the recording industry was fair with the artists from whom they're making their fortunes, I would be all for them. But that is NOT the case. The recording industry has always screwed the artists. And I don't think that's going to change in our lifetime.
