k&k episode 253 - the one where they talk about the world challenging Kylie to Bejewelled... and stuff...

We're exhuberant in episode 253, as we discuss the presence of parental figures in the chat, July birthdays and American birthday celebrations, the Bejewelled war, water balloons, school holidays and scheduling in our respective countries, broken bones and dramatic head injuries, the Abbey Bookshop's 20th Anniversary celebration (with scribes, medieval dancers and wine), the "heatwave" in Paris and why this city is so ill-equipped for hot weather (including reminiscing about swimming as kids, power outages and fire safety).

This episode was brought to you by the word "la canicule" (a scorching heatwave).

And don't forget about the 3rd Annual K&K Bastille Day picnic!!!

N.J :

I promise I will never try to get a higher score than Kyliemac in Bejeweled Blitz...

Crissy :

I must beat Kyliemac at Bejewled Blitz! Seriously though, years ago I had an addiction to Bejewled on my palm pilot, I stopped carrying it after a while and the addiction went to sleep. I was always afraid to start playing Bejewled Blitz but kept seeing Kyliemac's scores and eventually broke down and started playing again, I'm addicted again. Thanks!

As for school - I went to school in NY - Long Island. Our schedule is apparently closer to the French schedule. We would start the year in September right after Labor Day and go into the second to last week of June. We would have off usually 2 days (now it's often 2 and a half) for Thanksgiving, maybe some days for the Jewish holidays in the fall. Then a week to a week and a half for Christmas/New Years. Presidents week in February and a week and maybe an extra day or two for Easter. Our year would be broken up into Quarters - you would get a report card with grades after each quarter. The quaters did not necessarily coincide with our school breaks. In High School you would have midterms, that was in late January.

During a high school dance performace I misplaced a costume and in my frenzy of panic -- I opened a heavy door with a sharp edge...onto my face. The door split my forehead right down the middle. I didn't notice I was bleeding until a fellow dancer pointed at me and screamed. When I looked in the mirror my face was COVERED in blood.

Seems like the French would have gotten over their distain of air conditioning after they had that killer heatwave in August 2003 that killed nearly 20,000 people.

Why are the French so against air conditioning? I don't understand.

At least in Southern California it's the dry heat...most of the time.

Ugh I had beaten Kyliemac over the weekend, but then she had to go play again! I need to find a mouse so I can do better, the trackpad isn't cutting it! :)

I went to school in North Carolina, and we started the first week of August, had Labor Day off (1st Monday in Sept), had 1 or 2 days off in October (teacher work days), 3 days for Thanksgiving, 2-ish weeks for Christmas/New Years, MLK day (3rd Monday in Jan), sometimes Presidents day, but not every year, a teacher work day in March, a week at Easter, maybe a work day in April, and then we got out in the last week of May. So basically we got major holidays plus work days. It ended up that we got about one day a month off at least. In high school though we had a college-esque spring break in March and one day off at Easter.

One year we had so many snow days that we had to make them up on Saturdays. That sucked. But we did get two weeks off in January for snow!

This comment was a lot longer than I intended, oops!

variri :

Bejeweled Blitz... sigh... It seems, even with a mouse, I won't be able to beat Kyliemac's score, but I keep a bottle of champagne in the fridge, just in case.
Whe I was in med school (or supposed to be) I spent a lot of time riding horses, instead of going to school (shame on me), and one day I fell and the horse's shoe cut my forehead. I got stitches... and I had a very hard time explaining to my parents how I got them "à la fac" (at school)! And guess what? Today, I'm not a doctor, but I work with horses.

Italians are just as bad about air conditioning. Every summer it seems they start talking about how aircon can give you Legionnaire's Disease (WHAT??) lol. I also remember one of stefano's friends talking about how the change of temps made her sick (vomitous) to go from the airconditioned buildings in the SW to the outdoors. crazy. i live in texas where we have days of 100+ weather (38+C) and go from air conditioned car to 2 minutes of heat and back to air conditioned homes/buildings. never made me sick. HA

thankfully my husband is thoroughly americanized in this sense. so even if we live in Italy, we're getting an air conditioner!

no broken bones but when i was about 4 i fell out of the car while driving into the garage hitting my head though i dont think i cracked it open.. can't remember. ha
