Bank holidays are holidays that are specific to banks, or rather the stock exchange. The NYSE doesn't recongize all public holidays...so while most people do not work on a public holiday, if the particular public holiday is not recognized by the NYSE and you happen to work at a bank...then you must work...even though it's a public holiday because it's not a bank holiday. The UK also uses the term "bank holiday" to make a distinction between its public holidays and those holidays recognized by their stock exchange. Australia uses the term "bank holiday" too, but I don't know what it refers to in Australia...I only know about the US/UK. :0l http://www.rba.gov.au/EventsDiary/bank_holidays_2007.html

The Lyon/Lion thing is funny, because whenever Fab says "Lyon" (as in the city) in English, he says "Lion". I keep telling him that we say "Lyon" too, but for some reason, he just can't "print" it (to quote him again).

Mlle Smith - oooh that's all terribly interesting! And thanks for the link - I think, however, that the "bank holiday" they refer to on that website is public or "bank" holidays celebrated by overseas branches worldwide of that particular bank - and this is how employees of the bank know when they are etc. If I read it correctly. hehe.I think that the vast majority of Australians say "public holiday", and for me, "bank holiday" is a generally British term.Lyon, lion - it still cracks me up.

Oh and the NYSE info is SO interesting - who knew such a thing would happen?
