k&k episode 85 - the one where they talk about the concept of "home"... and stuff...
We're not sure what's come over us in episode 85 (it might be due to the amount of chocolate and champagne we consumed in the previous episode), but with the wonderful Vivi in front of the mike again, we discuss a lot of really deep and meaningful topics, including culture, identity, nationality and what "home" really means. These are questions that every expat asks themselves, and we think you might find our responses interesting. (Show links)
This episode was brought to you by the phrase "chez moi" (my house).

YAY! I'm your friend! YAY!
Great episode girls! It really hit "home" for me. From time to time, I tell my husband (who is also American) that I want to go "home" and he responds and says that I'm already home. Which always sounds weird to me. I still haven't found this to be home. BTW, near my 'hood in France, there's a town called, Pussy.
Just a quick note about Italians that I've talked to about the town they were born in will always have a special place in their heart. I've met many in the US or in other parts of Europe or even Italy and when you bring up their birth place, they look like they are day dreaming. That is home no matter where they are. I don't have that and I don't know of many Americans that do, but I could be wrong.
I guess I still don't consider France to be home. I've never really thought about it before, but I just realized that even when talking about where we currently live, I've always said I was going back to "the apartment" or now, "le g”te", and not "Okay, I'm heading home".I definitely consider myself Finnish-American though, but I guess since my grand-parents are immigrants, that makes me a second-generation American. My mom & her siblings all spoke Finnish at home growing up, and didn't learn English until they went to school. They lived in a huge Finnish community, where everyone could speak Finnish - even the church had a service in Finnish every Sunday. Nowadays, it's sort of dying out, and it'd be pretty rare to find people my age who spoke Finnish fluently. But I still identify myself as Finnish, even though I don't think the rest of my cousins do nearly as much as I do (I was always a lot more involved than they were in "Finnish" activities though).PS. My two favorites are "Condom" and "Montcuq"!
I'm finally catching up on episodes, thanks to the university being blocked. Yay!I feel a bit homeless more than anything else. I can feel comfortable quite a few places, but not of them are really "home", at least for the time being. We'll see.

One of my favorite episodes! Very deep and touching at times yet still funny. Looking forward to the next one!
